Annual Camping Trip
Just returned from our annual camping trip to North Park in Colorado. Was a great 9 days away from computers and TV's and radio and news. I am something of a news-aholic, but I didn't miss it until on the way home, when I started wondering what had been happening. Guess what - same - or very similar - stories on the news. Maybe I can wean myself away from the news, but I doubt it - it's just too accessible. And I think that's a problem for our culture. If news is everywhere and "if it bleeds, it leads" is the starting point for news, folks are likely to get a warped view of how the world actually is. And it's actually a safe, healthy, improving place. Additionally, of course, if there is any attempt to slant the news, that makes perceptions even more false. And my opinion is that much of the news is slanted to reflect liberal (in the US sense) views. As what is presented departs more and more from peoples experiences, there is likely to be an increased distrust of all news sources, except those that reflect your individual prejudices. A very dangerous situation for making rational decisions of the economy or politics.
I really got off track there. The camping trip was good. I caught fish everyday - stocked rainbows in the lakes and smaller, naturally spawned, brook trout in the stream. Even though the rainbows were somewhat bigger, I prefer the stream fishing and catching the brookies. Simply a prejudice thing. Not too much special in terms of wildlife seen until the drive over Cameron Pass Coming home - right on top of the pass was a herd of 6 - count 'em - 6 bull moose. Never seen anything like it. Really special.
